Now, before you get the wrong idea, I am not Elizabeth Taylor and I haven’t been married 10 times. Nor have I had 10 honeymoons. But with travel being so accessible and with such amazing destinations to choose from, here are 10 honeymoon destinations for you – whatever your travel style! After all the months – and sometimes years – of planning for the Big Day, you will want to relax and unwind.
As a travel consultant, my advice would be to use somebody like me to take care of the details for your honeymoon. It is one less thing for you to have to make time to do and plan for. Depending on your budget, there are many options. Whatever your final choice, think about opportunities for your wedding guests to contribute towards the cost of your honeymoon destination. After all, it is likely to be one of the largest holiday expenditures you will have made. Many travel agencies can provide wedding gift contribution schemes to help with the cost.
Wherever you choose, always tell them that you are going on your honeymoon. The travel industry is fun and upbeat and loves nothing more than any excuse for a celebration. And honeymoons deserve a big celebration! So don’t be surprised if you are given complimentary champagne, or chocolates, or upgrades, or flower petals on the bed or a free spa treatment. Let them spoil you – after all the efforts of planning your wedding it is the least you deserve.
Variety
There are lots of different types of honeymoons you can choose. Traditionally, a warm and sunny beach, with calm blue waters has been a top choice of destination. But there are other options – tours, off the beaten track escapes, multi-destination packages, and adventures to name a few.
Beach Destinations
The warm sunny beaches of the Caribbean, or the Maldives or Mauritius might seem like a world away. From complete wedding packages to honeymoon destinations, these amazing experiences can be more affordable that you might think.
1 The Caribbean
Traditionally the warm blue seas and white soft sandy beaches are a popular choice, particularly the adult only resorts that are abundant in the area. With 28 countries and thousands of islands, the Caribbean has something to offer whatever your taste. Ideal for romantic lazy walks along the beach, diving in the crystal-clear waters or sailing on the seas.
2 The Maldives
The 1200 coral islands that make up the Maldives are another popular choice, with their snowy white beaches and underwater gardens. Paradise indeed! With over-water bungalows and palm-edged beaches you won’t ever want to leave.
3 Sri Lanka
Home to one of the oldest civilisations in the world, Sri Lanka has much to offer and is full of amazing surprises. With pristine sandy beaches and national parks, you have the opportunity to get up close and personal to the island’s famous elephants. Often combined with a trip to the Maldives, a honeymoon in Sri Lanka will be an unbelievable experience.
There are also many other beach destinations including Mauritius, Hawaii, Bora Bora, Bali, Mexico, Florida, Europe, Fiji, Asia and Oceania and many more.
City Destinations
If a beach isn’t your scene, then why not consider a trip to a fantastic city location? Buzzing with nightlife and a huge variety of cultural experiences, a city destination can provide a great honeymoon experience.
4 – Las Vegas
Life in Vegas is bigger and better and generally just more outrageous. Lots to do, including theatre, shows, concerts. Pity you have just got married or you could have had whatever kind of ceremony you could imagine! But for a honeymoon experience that is different, this is the place to be.
5 – New York
Want to live the highlife – well why not visit the high line and tour this amazing city that never sleeps. A fantastic location for a honeymoon, with over 450 hotels in Manhattan alone you will have plenty of choice. Plus, with shops and experiences lining every street, and Central Park within easy access, you’ll have plenty of choices for activities to do.
6 – Moscow and St Petersburg
Heading off to the east, how about a fantastic tour of Moscow and St Petersburg? These iconic cities possess their own unique charms; Moscow with its glamour and historic landmarks and St Petersburg with its classical grandeur, calm canals and sophistication. And experience the Sapsan fast train, named after the fastest bird in the falcon family, as you speed between these two great cities at up to 155mph.
Adventures / Experiences
If you really like to push the boat out, then how about starting off the greatest adventure of all with one of the greatest adventures?
7 – South America / Galapagos Islands
This is surely a once in a lifetime experience. Experience the amazing Galapagos islands and walk in the footsteps of Charles Darwin as you witness incredible wildlife, and swim in the seas abundant with marine creatures. A never to be forgotten holiday, especially if you have the time to combine this with a tour of the Macchu Picchu in Peru, or to see the sites of Ecuador or the beaches of Chile.
8 – The Ice Hotel
The Ice hotel is now available all year round, but if you have a winter wedding then combine sleeping on an ice bed on warm reindeer skins with a husky adventure and a magical northern lights expedition.
9 – Far Eastern Tours
There are many places in the Far East where you can have a tailor-made tour, or join a small group exploring China, or Vietnam, or Cambodia, or Thailand, or anywhere else. Cultural experiences that are second to none and all can be combined with a beach holiday as well.
Closer to home
10 – The UK
I am cheating here, combining some of my favourite places under this heading. Even staying in the UK, there is so much to see and experience. The gorgeous white sandy beaches of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Bird and whale spotting in the Hebrides and Orkneys. Sea eagles in the Scottish highlands. The wonderful Lake District of England and the world heritage national parks in Wales. Our fantastic cities and beach resorts. One thing is sure – whatever your budget there will be something to suit every taste and desire.
Last bit of advice
Keep your mind open to the endless possibilities. Try something new. And make sure that you talk to a travel consultant about your plans and let them do the hard work for you. They have access to so many suppliers and holidays that are trade only and can put together a unique honeymoon package perfectly designed just for you.
